Location, political and cultural history
Situated at the northern end of the Adriatic Sea, Slovenia is the one part of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia that never, throught its area and at any time in its history, came under the influence of the Ottoman Empire. It is distinctly different from the rest of the former Yugoslavia in terms both of its culture and its economy. That difference reflects in the speed with which Slovenia was able to achieve full membership of the EU, the Euro currency zone and the open-borders Schengen area, the UN, NATO, the World Trade Organisation and other bodies. It has a stable government and a robust economy; this is especially true of the western half of the country where the per-capita income is well above the EU average.

Circumcision in Slovenia
The absence of Islamic influence means that circumcision is likely to be seen in Slovenia in much the same way as, for example, in Italy or Austria. No local statistics are known to CIRCLIST; if you have access to such data please contact the Editor using the link on the
index page to this chapter.
